The Ukrainian authorities in Kiev have embezzled “$400 million last year, at least,” of U.S. taxpayers money, according to veteran American journalist, Seymour Hersh, who recently grabbed headlines for his long-read article describing how it was the government of the United States that blew up the Nord Stream pipeline.

Now, a new Substack by Hersh reveals explosive details of how U.S., UK, and European tax payer cash is being used to line the pockets of Ukranian politicians, including President Zelensky and his allies.

The money, according to Hersh and his sources, has been used to buy luxury cars and fund ostentatious lifestyles. Allegedly, the director of America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, went so far as to present Zelensky personally with a list of “thirty-five generals and senior officials whose corruption was known to the CIA and others in the American government.”

Zelensky, claims Hersh, “publicly dismiss[ed] ten of the most ostentatious officials.”

More damning for the Ukrainian president, however, is the claim that, [t]he senior generals and government officials in Kiev were angry at what they saw as Zelensky’s greed, alleging that “he was taking a larger share of the skim money than was going to the generals.”

It’s been a year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In spite of claims from the regime and its media allies that Russia was the next Third Reich and would soon roll through half of Europe, it turns out that was never even remotely true.

In fact, things have unfolded more or less just like we predicted here at mises.org: the Russians aren’t even close to occupying any place in Europe beyond eastern Ukraine. It’s not Munich 1938. Economic sanctions have not crippled the Russian regime. Most of the world remains ambivalent on the conflict. The conflict will likely end with a negotiated settlement—contrary to what the Washington wants.

The fact is that in spite of the United States’ and North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) efforts to turn Ukraine into World War III, the war in Ukraine remains a regional conflict. It seems most of the world is uninterested in making sacrifices to carry out US policy in Ukraine and that many see the inherent hypocrisy behind US talk about respecting national sovereignty. 

There’s also an important lesson here about listening to the war maximalists who incessantly promote full-scale war as the “solution” to every international crisis. The US clearly wants to fight the war to the last Ukrainian, in what the US is packaging as a global crusade in the style of World War II. But, it seems now that more pragmatic thinkers—i.e., the French and the Germans—recognize that negotiations are the more humane solution.

The US Special inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) John Sopko, who has tracked billions of dollars of wasted money after the Biden Regime’s disastrous retreat from Afghanistan, warned that the US government approach to aid has not changed, speaking to Fox News.

“The very worst outcome is that the assistance gets diverted, stolen in such a way that it doesn’t accomplish its intended purpose — in this case, providing the Ukrainians with the weapons and the money to win their war against the aggressor, Russia,” Sopko told Fox News.

The Biden Regime has pleged at least 113 billion $ of taxpayer money to the most corrupt government in Europe with no oversight. It is inevitable that money will be lost to waste and corruption, Sopko said:

“We’re spending a heck of a lot of money in that country, and any time you spend that much money in any country, you’re bound to get wastage. You’re bound to get corrupt elements of not only the Ukrainian or the host government, but also of U.S. government contractors or other third party contractors to try to steal the money. There’s just so much money going in, and it’s hard to keep track of.”
