UVALDE: Nearly 400 Cops Were On Scene — Report Lays Out What Went Wrong

A new 77-page report lays out exactly what happened in Uvalde, what mistakes were made, and where the breakdowns were. An investigative committee from the Texas House of Representatives delivered the report.

The conclusions did not point to criminality on the part of any first responders but did indicate some massive SNAFUS in the decision-making process… the kind of screw-ups that could easily appear elsewhere in the country if we aren’t careful to address them.

The report stated, “There is no one to whom we can attribute malice or ill motives. Instead, we found systemic failures and egregious poor decision making.”
The report regarding the May 24 massacre found “an overall lackadaisical approach” by federal, state, and local authorities at the deadly crime scene.
The investigators said there were “shortcomings and failures of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District and of various agencies and officers of law enforcement.” —Blaze

How bad was it?

Bad enough that the acting police chief was put on leave.

The report, compiled by a Texas House Committee, detailed a series of missteps on a number of fronts — from the shooter’s family failing to identify warning signs to the school’s apparent habit of leaving doors unlocked or propped open — but the strongest condemnation was reserved for law enforcement officers who arrived on the scene and then waited to act for over an hour.
“They failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety,” the report read, openly criticizing law enforcement for failing to act in the face of a clear emergency — and making it clear that the biggest failure had not been in a lack of manpower or equipment but a lack of leadership and communication at a critical moment. —DailyWire

Law enforcement caught prioritizing their own safety over those they are sworn to ‘serve and protect’ is a pretty big red flag. Could they be overstating it? What kind of numbers are we looking at?

There were 376 law enforcement officers at Robb Elementary School during the shooting – including 149 from the United States Border Patrol, 14 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and 91 from the Texas Department of Public Safety. There were also 25 responders from Uvalde Police Department, 16 from the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office, 16 from the San Antonio Police Department (SWAT), and five officers from the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police.

Oh. That’s a lot. 376-to-one are some pretty good odds when you’re going up against some punk kid with a rifle. Imagine if the good guys hadn’t waited an hour on the other side of an unlocked(!) door to confront the homicidal maniac alone with a roomful of children.

It does make you wonder what they WERE doing in those 77 minutes to protect the lives of those children. Well, now we know.

Robb Elementary School Police Chief Peter Arredondo was recorded standing outside the classroom trying to negotiate with Salvador Ramos – rather than engage with the mass shooter, who ultimately never responded to his pleas.
Arredondo urged the teen to talk to him, trying to assure him that ‘this could be peaceful’ and asking him to ‘please put your firearm down’.
Despite his efforts, another round of gunshots was heard from the classroom.
‘Can you hear me sir?’ Arredondo asked following the shots. ‘Sir, if you can hear me, please put your firearm down, sir. We don’t want anybody else hurt.’
Angry parents and community members have called for Arredondo’s termination since the May 24 massacre that left 21 dead.
He was placed on administrative leave last month.
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin disclosed previously that another on-site negotiator had tried calling Ramos but the gunman never answered the phone. —DailyMail

In other words, they were wasting precious time when almost everyone with a pulse understands that someone who opens fire at a school isn’t going to stop until he runs out of ammunition or is put down like Old Yeller.
