Gorilla ‘Little Joe’ Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack at St. Louis Zoo Where Animals Received 2 Covid Jabs
St. Louis Zoo in Sept. 2021 launched ambitious "preventative care" effort administering Covid-19 vaccines
to its great apes population and other primate species.
A western lowland gorilla named “Little Joe” died from a heart attack over the weekend at the St. Louis Zoo, which recently administered COVID-19 vaccines to many of its animals.
The primate, who was 26-years-old, was reportedly being treated for heart disease when he suffered a heart attack and died in his sleep on Sunday.
“It is with incredible sadness that we share news that western lowland gorilla Little Joe, who had been under treatment for heart disease, passed away of a heart attack overnight on May 4th,” the Zoo wrote on Instagram. “Based on video monitoring, it appears he died in his sleep.”
Little Joe’s death comes as the St. Louis Zoo in Sept. 2021 launched an ambitious “preventative care” effort administering Covid-19 vaccines to its great apes population and other primate species.
Here’s St. Louis Zoo Director of Animal Health Sathya Chinnadurai explaining the Covid jab campaign, which used a vaccine created by Zoetis.
“On Sept. 29, 2021, adult male chimpanzee ‘Jimiyu’ was the first animal at our Zoo to be vaccinated against COVID-19,” the Zoo explained on their website at the time. “Over the next few months, we plan to administer the two-dose COVID-19 vaccine in a staged roll-out to almost 100 primates, big cats, river otters, painted dogs and bat-eared foxes, all of which carry a potential risk of being infected by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease.”
The St. Louis Zoo explained Zoetis “has donated 11,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to dozens of zoos, including the Saint Louis Zoo, and animal organizations across the nation.”
“Experimental use of this COVID-19 vaccine from Zoetis is authorized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Missouri State Veterinarian,” the Zoo added.
Considering the spate of heart issues related to the Covid-19 vaccine in humans, could the so-called preventative efforts undertaken by the zoo have been Little Joe’s undoing?
