The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic concluded its two-year investigation into the COVID-19 pandemic, releasing its final report titled “After Action Review of the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Lessons Learned and a Path Forward.” The large final report looks to be the final road map for Congress, the Executive Branch, and the private sector to prepare for and respond to future pandemics. Since February 2023, the Select Subcommittee (Committee) has sent more than 100 investigative letters conducted more than 30 transcribed interviews and depositions, held 25 hearings and meetings, and reviewed more than one million pages of documents. Members and staff have exposed high-level corruption in America’s public health system, confirmed the most likely origin of the pandemic, held COVID-19 bad actors publicly accountable, fostered bipartisan consensus on consequential pandemic-era issues, and more. This 520-page final report details all findings of the Select Subcommittee’s investigation.

So, what are the core findings?

In what is most certainly going to be received as controversial, the Committee has determined that COVID-19 most likely originated from a lab in Wuhan, China, supported by gain-of-function research funded by U.S. taxpayers through organizations like EcoHealth Alliance.

One "Proximal Origin" publication undertaken at the request of Dr. Anthony Fauci allegedly promoted the natural origin narrative. However, the Committee’s take on the right of the evidence weighs far heavier toward gain-of-function, a Wuhan lab leak and either horrendous oversight or worse, a cover-up. The evidence at best, points to poor oversight of high-risk research as the ultimate culprit.

But there is much more. The report calls out the mismanagement of public funds, specifically, COVID-19 relief funds faced significant fraud and abuse, with losses exceeding $450 billion, including $191 billion from unemployment claims and $64 billion from the Paycheck Protection Program.

In this case, the Committee concludes even more poor oversight and inadequate fraud protection measures were noted at federal and state levels.

What about public health measures?

Measures like social distancing, mask mandates, and prolonged lockdowns were labeled ineffective and harmful, especially for mental health, businesses, and youth. Many experts who had lamented the danger of the government’s approach, pointed to the science of natural immunity and touted the potential of repurposed medicine.

Federal policies neglected to emphasize natural immunity and caused public distrust in public health leadership.

While vaccine policies and development were considered a shining star of American pandemic response—in fact, the Committee praised Operation Warp Speed for its efficiency, in a bombshell, the Committee concludes the rushed approval and mandates of COVID-19 vaccines were criticized for bypassing scientific rigor and eroding public trust.

Vaccine injury reporting systems were inadequate, and the government failed to compensate vaccine-injured individuals effectively.

The U.S. government’s response to COVID-19 wrought great economic and societal upheaval with devastating economic, social, and cultural externalities.

Pandemic-era policies caused widespread business closures, employment disruptions, and exacerbated inflation due to Federal Reserve actions.  Meanwhile, school closures resulted in unprecedented learning loss, increased mental health issues, and long-term academic and physical health consequences for children.

All the while censorship intensified, and obfuscation and overreach became the norm during the pandemic. The Biden Administration, Health and Human Services, EcoHealth Alliance, and New York State were accused of obstructing investigations through document redactions, delays, and withholding information.

TrialSite has completed an initial report review and now embarks on a deeper dive for more detail. Some key assumptions we find include, first and foremost, that the "lab leak" theory is supported by biological, geographic, and circumstantial evidence. TrialSite also obtained a memorandum from the Department of Defense, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, outright declaring that SARS-CoV-2 was an American vaccine technology. But this is not necessarily conclusive proof, But the evidence under the current Committee points overwhelmingly to a lab leak answer.

Also, many public health measures were deemed politically motivated rather than science-based. What was behind six feet of distance versus five feet, for example? There was the constantly changing story with masking and outright obfuscation and then lies emanating from the government about the vaccines’ ability to stop transmission.

Other assumptions involve outright relief fund fraud, enabled by insufficient oversight and rapid rollout of funding mechanisms.

Importantly, the authors of this report make the assumption that vaccine mandates were implemented without adequate consideration of adverse effects or alternatives like natural immunity.

Biased Report?

TrialSite notes that this report exhibits a strong bias against the Biden Administration, public health institution leadership during the pandemic, and certain public health policies, potentially reflecting partisan influences.

The emphasis on lab leak theories and gain-of-function research oversight may overshadow alternative scientific viewpoints that many in the scientific community cling to, such as the zoonotic origin. Some even more fringe hypotheses suggest the pathogen was in circulation by late 2019 as well. But the Republican-dominated Committee has settled on what was likely expected.

Plus, the favorable appraisal of Trump Administration policies like Operation Warp Speed may reflect political leanings.

What are some limitations?

The investigation relied heavily on publicly available data and testimony, which might lack comprehensive validation. Plus, the allegations against public health figures and institutions may require further independent verification, and possibly bipartisan confirmation for such a sweeping conclusion.

Some findings, such as fraud estimates, may not account for ongoing recovery and rectification efforts. Additionally, the report’s tone and content could polarize audiences, affecting bipartisan cooperation on future pandemic preparedness.
